Main Idea

Here are eight  reading passages which are designed for 3rd grade or 4th grade students to read and determine the main idea. This activity can be used to differentiate instruction.
This reading activity can be used during whole group instruction, guided practice, independent practice, homework, literacy centers, or for assessment. Visit the link below to read more about this wonderful activity.

These 8 reading passages are designed for 3rd grade or 4th grade students to read and determine the main idea. The practice is leveled so that one set of the reading passages has multiple choice answers, and the other set of task cards are free response (students must decide on the main idea independently).:

  2. Very interesting site. Teaching students how to find the main idea can be quite a challenge, hence finding alternative procedures can pose to be very helpful. Thank you Bertha for the information.

  3. This is a great approach to differentiating task, so that students can work at their level. This way faster learners can be challenged, while average and slower learners can feel accomplished when they are able to complete the task. This gives me ideas for other areas in Language as well. Thank you Bertha

  5. I believe this is great, but i think main idea can be covered in a content area as well. Too many times we as teachers tend to use language arts or stories for our students to find the main idea, but they can develop holistically by in cooperating some informational passage so they can find the main idea for. By doing this the students would still be doing the main idea process but more importantly understanding the content they have read in their own words. Main idea needs to be taught across all content areas to help students develop better understanding
