Reading is a fundamental skill that defines the academic successor failure of students. As noted by Barbara Foorman from the University of Texas, Houston Medical School, "88 percent of students who were poor readers in first grade were poor readers in fourth grade" (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development [NICHD], 2000, 9). Once students reach fourth grade, most of the information they need is given to them in textual format where the focus changes from learning to read, to reading to learn. Therefore, those poor readers may have difficulty interacting with content in the curriculum (Higgins, Boone, and Lovitt, 2002).
I encourage my students to read so they can become better writers!

i am happy to see this. I agree as well but in giving them these books ensure that you provide them with a variety of literature which will expand their knowledge. Ensure to inlcude some fiction books etc. Books which will assist with Integration of various subject areas as well. I love the idea of books and reading. Makes so much sense
ReplyDeleteI share your sentiments kurby. What I would add is that students should be taught how to read and how to critically evaluate what they read. Reading is an active process, therefore students must be equipped with the skills and strategies to get the most out of their reading.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your statement "I encourage my students to read so they can become better writers!" because, as we learnt in our LIT102 class, this is one of the most important aspects in preparing students for writing. When students read they get ideas for their own writing and also become familiar with various writing types and structures. Nice work Keyannie, keep it up!

Great Job Keyanie.
ReplyDelete"Writing is a difficult trade which must be learned slowly by reading great authors; by trying at the outset to imitate them; by daring then to be original and by destroying one's first productions.

I love this picture of a literacy rich environment. Having such an environment in the classroom without a doubt encourages our students to read which in turn assist students in finding creative ideas for their own writing.
ReplyDeleteAny student who came across environment with love to read. I do agree with you.

wen i have my classroom i will definitely create a literacy rich environment for my students to get them to read and write more and become more interested in literacy
ReplyDeletevery nice and when I become a teacher I want my class to be literature rich. The more you read the more you are able to generate new ideas. Reading different book will not only help the students with English language but also the other subject areas. The earlier this is encouraged the better for these students.
