Descriptive Writing Part 1

Today's class was amazing, thanks to the course lecturer Miss Polius. Miss Polius made the class interesting and created a class that fostered students participation and discussion. We were introduced to one genre of writing, which was descriptive writing.  Miss introduced the class by reading a descriptive piece by a student. After, we discussed the passage, we looked at the different writing techniques that was evident in the piece. Also, we described the different tools that can be used when writing. We were also introduced to to the five senses cluster. The cluster is used to brainstorm ideas for any writer, the cluster includes what I see, how it sounds, what I smell, how it tastes and how it feels. After much discussion the students were required to choose a favourite fruit. Thereafter, we the students were given a few minutes to write our ideas using the cluster. Upon completion some students shared what was written on paper. We were then required to take our work home to add more ideas for the next class.
As a teacher in training this class was very informative and beneficial. I will employ the same teaching techniques and ideas that were used in today's class.

To instruct, to guide, to inspire!

  2. For starters, this is a great post. You explained what was done in class. Can you comment on what you found interesting and what ideas you can perhaps take from the session to your own instructional practice?

  4. I am using my right to blog! I really enjoyed the five senses cluster, it made descriptive writing seem a lot easier to do. The way in which the lecturer went about doing the lesson was ok. I think i can also make use of her strategy but better it for a group of grade 3 students. Good job!

  5. I found the five senses cluster to be very helpful, especially as it brought me back to the Diagnostic Assessment of Writing session with the child, I realised that she did not include sufficient sensory details in her writing, however at this point if I had to teach her I would not have been equipped with enough strategies to assist her. However, after this lesson I can now see how I can use the five sense cluster to help even the less able writers in my class.

  7. Great job guys. Your blog post mirrors what transpired in class. The five senses cluster is indeed very useful as it guides the process of planning a descriptive piece. Thus making the writing of the descriptive piece less challenging. I must commend the course lecturer, Miss Polius, for teaching the different techniques and skills necessary, that will aid in the development of proficient writers. Also, I would like to applaud her for modelling each step of the writing process meticulously.

  8. Lovely Post colleagues. I am reading this and I am able to remember in detail what happened in that class. What also stood out to me was the five senses cluster because I found that it condensed the information in a simpler way and made it easier to interpret and understand. Happy Blogging !
